The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is the grand old cabinet of Egyptian archaeology – pink, crowded and stacked with more than a hundred thousand objects, many still carrying only handwritten labels. You start on the ground floor, moving roughly chronologically through Old, Middle and New Kingdom statuary, from the serene seated scribe to colossal royal figures. Upstairs your guide walks you through the Tutankhamun collection – the nested golden shrines, the jewellery and the famous funerary mask – and through the museum's mummy galleries, where preserved remains and painted coffins put faces to the people behind the monuments. Because the labelling is sparse and the halls are dense, the commentary does the heavy lifting, picking out the pieces worth lingering on and the threads that tie them together. The visit runs three to four hours with hotel pickup and drop-off and skip-the-line entry, so your time goes to the galleries rather than the ticket queue. It pairs naturally with a Giza pyramids morning, but it stands on its own as the richest single stop for ancient Egypt in the city centre.
