Egypt sits within comfortable reach of India — close enough for a Diwali break, big enough to fill an eight-night honeymoon or a full family holiday. The tours below are bookable, and this page covers the practical side first: how you get there from Delhi or Mumbai, the visa an Indian passport needs, what packages actually cost in rupees, and when to go. Prices are indicative bands for 2026; always verify fares and fees before you book.

Flights from India

There is a direct route to Cairo (CAI). EgyptAir flies from Delhi and Mumbai, and Air India runs a non-stop on select Delhi–Cairo dates. Delhi–Cairo is roughly 6h35m; Mumbai–Cairo about 8h20m non-stop. If your trip is built around the Red Sea — Hurghada (HRG) or Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) — you'll almost always connect through a Gulf hub instead: Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, or flydubai. Those connecting itineraries typically run 9–15 hours or more depending on the layover. Return economy fares sit in a wide band, roughly INR 45,000–1,20,000, with EgyptAir returns seen around ₹51,680 and seasonal one-ways from about ₹18,000. Fares move a lot by season, so treat these as a starting point and verify.

Visa for Indian citizens

Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt, and for almost everyone the right route is the online e-visa at visa2egypt.gov.eg. Apply at least 7 days before departure — realistically 10–14 days, since processing runs about 5–7 working days. A single-entry e-visa costs around USD 25 (roughly ₹2,100–3,000); multiple-entry is about USD 60. One 2026 report cites a small fee increase, so confirm the exact amount on the portal. The single-entry visa is valid 90 days from approval and allows a stay of up to 30 days; carry a printed copy and make sure your passport has at least six months' validity.

There is also a conditional visa-on-arrival (about USD 25 cash, 30 days), but only if you already hold a valid, used multiple-entry US, UK or Schengen visa — some add Australia, Canada, New Zealand or Japan — or a GCC residence permit, or you're travelling on a tour arranged by a licensed Egyptian agency. It's granted at immigration's discretion, so the e-visa remains the safer choice.

New Cairo digital VOA (from 1 Aug 2026)

From 1 August 2026, Cairo airport introduced a digital visa-on-arrival option, streamlining the counter process for eligible arrivals. It's a welcome convenience, but eligibility conditions still apply and it doesn't replace the e-visa for most Indian travellers — apply online first and treat the digital VOA as a fallback rather than your plan.

What it costs — and why India books Egypt

Egypt is a major honeymoon and group/family destination for Indian travellers, and the big operators reflect that. Thomas Cook India, SOTC, Veena World and MakeMyTrip all run Egypt departures, with MakeMyTrip in particular selling romantic Nile packages. Indicative per-person bands for 2026: Thomas Cook from about ₹1,42,200, MakeMyTrip Egypt from around ₹1,44,668 and its Nile packages from ₹1,99,672, with the overall market spanning roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000-plus from budget to luxury. Lower promo figures you'll see (SOTC from around ₹29,620) are usually land-only. A full package from Veena World typically bundles return flights, hotels, a cruise with meals, guided tours, transfers and visa assistance.

When to go

October to February is the sweet spot — cool, comfortable sightseeing weather with days around 20–28°C. It lines up neatly with the Indian calendar too: late October and November catch Diwali with good weather and lighter crowds, while the December–January winter school break is peak season, busier and pricier, so book well ahead. Avoid the May–June summer holidays if you can — that's Egypt's hot season, especially punishing in Upper Egypt around Luxor and Aswan.

What to book

The classic itinerary is Cairo plus a Nile cruise: the Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, then a 3–4 night Luxor–Aswan cruise, running about eight nights in total.
