Kuwait sits barely three hours from the pyramids, which is why Cairo has quietly become one of the most reliable long-weekend and summer-holiday runs out of KWI. Kuwaiti nationals cross the border visa-free, the flight schedule is dense enough that you can leave after work and be at the Egyptian Museum by breakfast, and when Kuwait's summer heat becomes unbearable, the Red Sea is right there for a beach reset. This page walks through the flights, the entry rules, and the kinds of trips worth booking.
Getting there: flights from Kuwait
EgyptAir, Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways all run direct Kuwait City (KWI) to Cairo (CAI). It is a genuinely high-frequency route: around 87 flights a week were reported as of July 2026, so you rarely have to bend your plans around the timetable. The hop itself is short, roughly 3h15m to 3h30m. Cheapest round-trip fares have been observed around 235 to 261 euros (roughly KWD 75 to 85 equivalent), and Wego has cited one-way fares from about KWD 50 — always convert and verify at booking.
For the Red Sea, Jazeera Airways is the main direct carrier from Kuwait City to Hurghada (HRG), with fares observed from around USD 195 one-way, though direct capacity is thinner than on the Cairo route. Sharm El Sheikh tends to be seasonal or charter-dependent, so most Sharm itineraries route through Cairo.
Visas: nationals versus residents
The entry rules split two ways, so check which one is yours before you book.
Kuwaiti nationals enter Egypt visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 30 days. Nothing to apply for, nothing to pay — just turn up with your passport.
Expat residents of Kuwait holding a valid Kuwait residency permit qualify for a visa on arrival or e-visa, provided the residency has at least six months left. The traditional single-entry tourist visa on arrival has been priced around USD 25 for a 30-day stay. You can also pre-approve through the official e-Visa portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg before you fly.
The new digital visa on arrival
From 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport launched a digital visa-on-arrival pilot across all arrival terminals, replacing paper stickers with a QR code. You can generate it before departure, in the air, or on landing — through the official portal at visaonarrival.gov.eg, a "Visa On Arrival" mobile app, or self-service kiosks in the arrival halls. Reported fees and validity still vary between sources (roughly USD 36, with QR validity quoted as either 48 hours or up to 7 days), so treat the exact numbers as unsettled during the pilot. Paper visas still run alongside the QR system for now; the digital route is for tourism, not business.
What to book
Egypt specialists sell Kuwait-origin packages that pair Cairo (the Giza pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Khan El Khalili) with a Red Sea leg in Hurghada. Multi-city runs — Cairo plus Luxor or Aswan plus Hurghada, up to about 12 days — are common, typically bundling pyramids sightseeing with diving or beach days. No native KWD price band is published; operators quote on request. As an indicative cross-market benchmark only, comparable Gulf packages have run from around USD 999 for an 8-day Hurghada holiday to about USD 1,220 for a 12-day multi-city trip. If a Nile leg tempts you, our Nile cruise guide covers the Luxor–Aswan stretch.
Best time to go
The peak family window is the summer school holidays, roughly June to August, when Kuwait's heat pushes families toward the Red Sea. Hurghada in July and August runs about 34–37°C with near-zero rain, sea around 28°C, cooled by a steady breeze and low humidity. Eid Al-Adha, observed Thursday 28 May 2026 in Egypt, is a major short-break spike, with Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam the go-to beach options. For Cairo sightseeing rather than beach, October to April is the cooler, more comfortable stretch.
Money and practical notes
The currency is the Egyptian Pound. Bring some clean USD or EUR cash — you will need it for the cash-only visa kiosk — and withdraw EGP from ATMs on arrival for better rates. Visa and Mastercard work widely; Amex is patchy. Keep small notes for tipping (baksheesh), which is expected across most services, and tell your bank you are travelling so cards do not get blocked.

Do Kuwaiti citizens need a visa for Egypt?
No. Kuwaiti nationals enter Egypt visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 30 days — no pre-application and no fee. Just bring a valid passport.
What about expats living in Kuwait?
Foreign nationals with a valid Kuwait residency permit (at least six months remaining) qualify for a visa on arrival or e-visa. The traditional single-entry tourist visa has been priced around USD 25 for 30 days. Verify the current fee at booking.
How long is the flight from Kuwait to Cairo?
Roughly 3h15m to 3h30m direct. EgyptAir, Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways all fly the route, with around 87 flights a week reported as of mid-2026.
Can I fly directly to the Red Sea from Kuwait?
Jazeera Airways runs direct Kuwait City to Hurghada, with fares observed from about USD 195 one-way, though capacity is more limited than the Cairo route. Sharm El Sheikh is usually seasonal or charter-based, so most Sharm trips route via Cairo. Verify direct availability by date.
What is the new digital visa on arrival at Cairo?
From 1 August 2026, Cairo airport began issuing QR-code visas via the official portal (visaonarrival.gov.eg), a mobile app, or airport kiosks, replacing paper stickers.
