Quick answer: A taxi from Cairo airport to Giza runs about 300β600 EGP (US$9β15), or a pre-booked private transfer US$25β50; the drive is 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. Cairo Airport's own guidance warns against unmetered black-and-white taxi touts β use a metered white taxi, Uber/Careem, or a pre-booked transfer, and agree the fare before you move. All prices below were checked September 2026 and quoted as ranges, because fares move with fuel and season.
Getting the transfer right is the difference between a smooth arrival and a first-hour scam. Here are real, sourced fares for the routes travellers actually use β with the honest caveats where sources disagree or a mode simply doesn't work.
Airport transfers β the fares that matter most
| Route | Mode | EGP | USD | Journey |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo airport β Giza | Metered taxi | 300β600 EGP | $9β15 | 45β75β90β120 min |
| Cairo airport β Giza | Uber / Careem | 400β700 EGP | $12β20 | 45β75β90β120 min |
| Cairo airport β Giza | Private transfer | β | $25β50 | 45β75β90β120 min |
| Cairo airport β central/downtown Cairo | Metered taxi | 250β450 EGP | β | 25 min |
| Cairo airport β central/downtown Cairo | Uber / Careem | 200β350 EGP | β | 30β50 min |
| Cairo airport β central/downtown Cairo | Private transfer | 850β1340 EGP | β | 24 min |
| Luxor airport β Luxor hotels | Metered taxi | β | $10β15 | 15β20 min |
| Luxor airport β Luxor hotels | Uber / Careem | β | β | β |
| Luxor airport β Luxor hotels | Private transfer | β | $15β25 | β |
| Sharm el-Sheikh airport (SSH) β Naama Bay | Metered taxi | 100β250 EGP | β | 20β40 min |

| Sharm el-Sheikh airport (SSH) β Naama Bay | Private transfer | β | $24 | 20 min |
Ranges reflect real quoted fares from multiple operators, checked September 2026. Metered white taxis and Uber/Careem are cheapest; a pre-booked private transfer costs more but a driver waits for you β worth it on a layover or a late arrival.
Intercity routes β where a taxi is the wrong tool
For the long desert routes below, a city taxi meter does not apply β no operator publishes a metered intercity fare, and a driver who agrees to one will improvise a price. Use a pre-booked private car, or the train (CairoβLuxor, CairoβAlexandria) or a domestic flight, which are usually faster and cheaper for the distance.
| Route | Mode | EGP | USD | Journey |

For CairoβLuxor (~650 km, 8β9 hours by road) and CairoβHurghada (~460 km, ~6 hours), most travellers fly or take the overnight train rather than drive.
The five-minute scam-avoidance briefing
Egypt's transfer scams are predictable, which makes them easy to sidestep:
- The "broken meter." If a white taxi's meter is "broken," agree a fixed price before you get in, or use Uber/Careem where the price is set in the app.
- The touts at arrivals. The unmetered black-and-white cabs and the men offering "taxi?" inside the terminal are exactly who the airport warns about. Walk to the official metered-taxi rank or meet your pre-booked driver.
- The "your hotel is closed" detour. A driver who claims your hotel is closed, overbooked or moved is angling to take you to one that pays commission. It isn't; insist on your booked address.
- The currency switch at drop-off. Agree the currency (EGP or USD) as well as the number before you set off, so "15" doesn't become "15 dollars each" at the end.
- Small notes. Carry small EGP notes; "no change" is a classic way to round a fare up.
Book it and forget it
On a tight schedule β a layover, a late-night landing, a cruise shore day β a pre-booked transfer with a driver who tracks your flight removes every one of the risks above. Tell us your route and flight and we'll arrange a vetted driver at a fixed, agreed price.

How much is a taxi from Cairo airport to the Pyramids?
About 300β600 EGP (US$9β15) in a metered white taxi, or US$25β50 for a pre-booked private transfer, checked September 2026. The drive is 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic, heaviest 3β7pm. Avoid the unmetered black-and-white taxi touts the airport warns about.
Should I use Uber or a taxi in Cairo?
Uber and Careem both operate in Cairo and set the price in the app, which sidesteps meter disputes β a good default for airport and city trips. Metered white taxis are fine too; agree the fare or ensure the meter runs. Avoid unmetered black-and-white cabs.
How do you avoid taxi scams in Egypt?
Agree the price and currency before you set off (or use Uber/Careem), use metered white taxis or a pre-booked transfer rather than airport touts, refuse any 'your hotel is closed' detour, and carry small EGP notes. Cairo Airport itself warns travellers about unmetered black-and-white taxi touts.
How do you get from Cairo to Luxor or Hurghada?
Not by metered taxi β those are 460β650 km desert routes with no metered fare. Most travellers fly (about an hour) or take the train to Luxor and Alexandria. A pre-booked private car is an option but slower and, for Luxor, an 8β9 hour drive.
How much is an airport transfer in Sharm El Sheikh or Luxor?
Sharm airport to Naama Bay is roughly 100β250 EGP (about US$3β8), 15β40 minutes. Luxor airport to the city hotels is about US$10β15, 15β20 minutes. Both were checked September 2026; a pre-booked transfer costs a little more but a driver meets you.
Are Egypt taxi prices fixed or negotiable?
Metered white taxis and Uber/Careem are effectively fixed (by meter or app). Everything else β private drivers, intercity cars, the unmetered cabs β is negotiable, so agree the price and currency upfront. Published fares move with fuel and season, so treat any quoted figure as a dated guide.
