16-Hour Layover in Cairo (2026): Pyramids, Museums & Old Cairo
Sixteen hours is enough for a full day: the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then Islamic Cairo — the Citadel, Khan el-Khalili — with a real dinner. Here's how to sequence it around the traffic.

Quick answer: Sixteen hours is a full Cairo day. With the transit visa and a driver, you can do the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum and cross into Islamic Cairo — the Citadel, Khan el-Khalili bazaar — with time for a proper dinner, and still make your flight. It's the first layover length where you can pair the ancient sights with the living city rather than choosing.
Sixteen hours is where a Cairo layover becomes a genuine two-act day: the pharaonic west side in the morning, the medieval city in the afternoon. Sequenced right — and it has to be sequenced right, because of the traffic — it's one of the best long layovers anywhere.

Is 16 hours enough for the Pyramids and the city?
Yes, and that's the point of this length. After immigration, the transit visa and the airport runs, 16 hours leaves you a genuine nine to ten hours in the city — enough to give Giza the morning, cross to Islamic Cairo for the afternoon, eat well, and still anchor a safe buffer for the return. The one discipline: do Giza first, before the midday and evening traffic thickens.
A 16-hour timeline built around the traffic
| Time from landing | Plan |
|---|---|
| 0:00–1:00 | Immigration, transit visa, meet driver |
| 1:00–2:00 | Drive to Giza (morning traffic lighter) |
| 2:00–4:30 | Pyramids and Sphinx |
| 4:30–6:30 | Grand Egyptian Museum |
| 6:30–7:30 | Lunch near Giza |
| 7:30–9:00 | Cross to Islamic Cairo (the Citadel of Saladin, with its Mohamed Ali Mosque) |
| 9:00–11:00 | Khan el-Khalili bazaar and a walk through medieval Cairo |
| 11:00–12:30 | Dinner in or near the old city |
| 12:30–14:00 | Drive back to the airport |
| 14:00–16:00 | Security, onward check-in, buffer |

The two-act day: ancient, then medieval
The morning is Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum — the pyramids, the Sphinx, and Tutankhamun's treasures in the vast new museum beside the plateau. The afternoon crosses to a completely different Cairo: the Citadel of Saladin on its hill with the alabaster Mohamed Ali Mosque and a city-wide view, then down into Khan el-Khalili, the centuries-old bazaar of lantern-lit alleys, coppersmiths and coffee houses. A dinner in the old city — grilled meats, mezze, a mint tea in a historic café such as the centuries-old El Fishawy in the heart of the bazaar — is the natural close before the drive back. It's a lot to fit in, but 16 hours genuinely holds it if you keep Giza in the morning and don't let any single stop overrun.
The slower alternative, if you'd rather not rush
Sixteen hours holds the two-act day comfortably, but it doesn't have to be packed. A perfectly good alternative is to slow the ancient half right down — a long, unhurried morning and lunch at Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, going inside a pyramid, lingering at the Sphinx and the panorama — and then pick just one afternoon stop in the old city (the Citadel for the view and the mosque, or Khan el-Khalili for the bazaar, not both) before an early dinner and a relaxed drive back. If it's your first time in Egypt and you'd rather feel one place deeply than tick four, this is the better use of 16 hours than a forced march. There's no prize for cramming; the pyramids reward the time you give them.

Keep the return sacred
The risk on a big day is letting the afternoon run long. Fix your "leave the city" time against worst-case evening traffic and hold to it — Cairo's roads are heaviest 3–7pm, and the airport run from the old city is not quick. A driver for the whole day, tracking your flight, is close to essential at this length. If you have even more time, a 24-hour layover adds Coptic Cairo, a felucca on the Nile, and the option of a hotel.
Before you go: the visa and the ride (in brief)
Two things make or break a Cairo layover, and both are covered in full in our Cairo airport layover guide: the free 96-hour transit visa (for layovers of 8–96 hours, from the EgyptAir Transit Office — or a printed e-visa at US$30 if you don't qualify), and getting a driver who waits and tracks your flight. Cairo Airport itself warns against unmetered black-and-white taxi touts, so use a metered white taxi, Uber/Careem, or a pre-booked transfer. Always plan your return on worst-case traffic (up to 2 hours from Giza, heaviest 3–7pm) and remember international check-in closes 60 minutes before departure.
Tell us your flight times and nationality on WhatsApp and we'll confirm whether you can leave, whether you qualify for the free transit visa, and set up a driver who tracks your inbound flight — so traffic or a delay doesn't cost you the trip.

Is a 16-hour layover in Cairo enough to see the city?
Yes — 16 hours is a full day. It leaves roughly nine to ten hours in the city after airport formalities: enough for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in the morning and Islamic Cairo (the Citadel, Khan el-Khalili) with dinner in the afternoon.
What can you see in a 16-hour Cairo layover?
A two-act day: the Giza Pyramids, Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum in the morning, then the Citadel of Saladin and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Islamic Cairo in the afternoon, with a proper dinner in the old city before the drive back.
How should I sequence a 16-hour Cairo layover?
Do Giza first, in the morning when traffic is lighter, then cross to Islamic Cairo for the afternoon and evening. Fix a firm 'leave the city' time against worst-case evening traffic (heaviest 3–7pm) so the return to the airport stays safe.
Do you qualify for the free transit visa on a 16-hour layover?
Yes — 16 hours is within the 8–96-hour window for the free transit visa from the EgyptAir Transit Office, subject to nationality. Otherwise a printed e-visa (US$30) works. See our Cairo airport layover guide for the full mechanics.
Can you visit Khan el-Khalili on a Cairo layover?
On a 16-hour or longer layover, yes. The bazaar pairs well with the nearby Citadel for an afternoon in Islamic Cairo, after a morning at Giza. On shorter layovers (10–12 hours) it's usually a step too far from the airport to be safe.
Should I hire a driver for the whole 16-hour day?
Yes — a private driver for the full day, tracking your inbound flight, is close to essential at this length. It removes the taxi-tout risk (which Cairo Airport itself warns about) and keeps a multi-stop day on schedule for the return.
