Luxor Day Trips from Cairo

Cairo to Luxor is about an hour by air, and that flight is what turns the world's greatest open-air museum into a day trip.

By road Luxor is the better part of nine hours from Cairo, which is why every real day trip flies: out on a dawn departure, back in the evening, with a private guide and vehicle waiting in between. It is the most time-efficient way to stand in the Valley of the Kings while basing your whole stay in Cairo.

What you see

The core circuit covers both banks. On the West Bank, the Valley of the Kings with a walk through painted royal tombs, the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Across the river, the vast Karnak complex, and, when the timing works, Luxor Temple as well. Lunch is usually squeezed between banks rather than lingered over: this is a day built for monuments.

Is it worth it?

If Cairo is your only base and you have one spare day, absolutely: no other single day in Egypt covers more. Compare listings carefully though, because some prices include the round-trip flights and some cover only the ground arrangements. And if you can spare a night, staying over transforms the pace. Our things to do in Luxor guide shows what a second day would add.

Frequently asked questions

How do day trips from Cairo to Luxor work?

They fly. The road takes the better part of nine hours each way, so tours use an early morning flight south and an evening flight back, with a guide and vehicle covering the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Karnak in between.

Is one day enough for Luxor?

It covers the essentials: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak. It cannot cover everything, so if your schedule allows an overnight, the pace improves enormously. Check whether your tour price includes the flights.
