Overview

On a visit to the White Desert, an area of about 3,000 square kilometres, you will encounter a landscape that is strikingly different from other nature reserves. Day and night it forms a kingdom of white, covered in white sand, limestone and chalk. You will see unusual geological formations and fossil remains, and in the evening the moon’s rays will reflect on the bright surface. Some rocks, because of their composition, also store sunlight during the day and rebroadcast it at night, producing a faint glow similar to moonlight. Everything here has a legendary quality. Huge, rare chalk rocks rise like giant sculptural forms carved by nature. As you move through the area you will notice formations that resemble a bird, an animal, a Sphinx, a human figure and tree-like shapes. Some rocks create natural canopies you can pass beneath. The unusual shapes and the interplay of light and stone make exploring the White Desert a memorable way to observe geological artistry and the remnants of ancient life.
