White Desert & Bahariya — Overnight Camp Safari

Overview

Egypt's most surreal landscape lies a few hours southwest of Cairo, and this two-day safari camps right in the middle of it. On the first day you drive out to the Bahariya Oasis, swap the highway for a 4x4 and cross the Black Desert, where low volcanic hills are strewn with dark iron-black stones, stopping at Crystal Mountain, a ridge glittering with natural quartz. The track then drops into the White Desert National Park, an otherworldly plain where wind and sand have carved the chalk into brilliant white towers, mushrooms and sculptural shapes, most dramatic through the cliffs of the Valley of Agabat. As the sun sets your Bedouin crew sets up a simple desert camp among the formations, cooks dinner over a fire and lays out bedding under a sky thick with stars, often with a desert fox slipping past the firelight. You wake for sunrise, when the white rock turns pink and gold, before the drive back to Cairo on the second day, taking in the oasis springs and dunes along the way. Transfers from Cairo, the 4x4 safari, camping equipment, meals at the camp and a guide are all included. Warm clothing for the cold desert night and a sleeping layer are worth bringing.
