Overview

A couple of hours southwest of Cairo the Fayoum depression turns into proper desert, and this full-day 4x4 safari heads for its strangest corner: Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales. Forty million years ago this was seabed, and the fossilised skeletons of early whales – creatures still bearing small legs, caught mid-evolution from land animal to sea mammal – lie exposed among wind-carved rock. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a marked trail and an open-air museum, and seeing the bones lying in the sand where they were found is nothing like an indoor exhibit. On the way you cross the Wadi El-Rayan protected area, where waterfalls link two desert lakes, and stop at the still Magic Lake, ringed by dunes that shift colour through the day. The 4x4 handles the soft sand and gets you out among the dunes, with time to try sandboarding, and a picnic lunch is set up in the desert. It is a long day with a fair amount of driving, but it swaps temples and crowds for geology, fossils and open space – an easy change of pace from Cairo's ancient-Egypt circuit, and a genuine natural wonder most visitors never reach.
