Overview

This half-day takes you deeper into Luxor's West Bank than the standard tours, to the tombs and temples the crowds often miss. You begin in the Valley of the Queens, the burial ground of royal wives and princes, where — access permitting — the tomb of Nefertari, wife of Ramesses II, is regarded as the most beautiful painted tomb in all Egypt, its walls covered in vivid, near-perfect scenes of the queen among the gods. From there you visit the Tombs of the Nobles, cut for the high officials of Thebes, whose reliefs trade royal ceremony for scenes of daily life — hunting, farming, banqueting and music — painted in warm, intimate detail. The day finishes at Medinet Habu, the vast and superbly preserved mortuary temple of Ramesses III, whose towering pylons still carry their original carved colour and whose battle reliefs record the defeat of the Sea Peoples. Your Egyptologist guide connects these lesser-visited sites into the wider story of the West Bank necropolis. With entrance tickets arranged, it is a rewarding, quieter alternative to the Valley of the Kings for travellers who want the art and detail of ancient Thebes without the queues.
