Overview

At Edfu Temple, also known as the Horus Temple, you will see one of Egypt’s most significant ancient monuments. This site is the second largest ancient temple in the country, after Karnak Temple, and its size and presence will be obvious as you view the stone façades and massing from different angles. As you move around the temple you will learn that its construction spanned a long period — it took 180 years to build. That single fact offers a clear measure of the time and effort invested in the site. Along the way you can reflect on the temple’s scale and age, and how it compares to other major Egyptian temples such as Karnak. The focus here is on seeing the monument in person and understanding the basic historical facts about its size and the lengthy construction period.
