Overview

Skip the crowds of the Valley of the Kings for a quieter, more human corner of Luxor's West Bank. The Tombs of the Nobles belonged not to pharaohs but to the officials, priests and governors who ran ancient Egypt, and their painted walls show everyday life rather than the afterlife — hunting in the marshes, banquets and musicians, farming and fishing, all rendered in colours that remain astonishingly vivid. Because far fewer visitors come here, you can take your time with the detail. Nearby lies Deir el-Medina, the remarkably intact village of the very artisans who cut and decorated the royal tombs across the hills; you can walk the stone lanes of their workmen's settlement and visit their own beautifully finished tombs, some of the finest on the West Bank. Crowning the site is the small, well-preserved Ptolemaic Temple of Hathor. A licensed Egyptologist guide travels with you to read the reliefs, explain who these people were and how they lived, and connect the village to the great tombs it built. Entrance tickets are arranged in advance, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
