Overview

Swap the crowds of the plateau for the open desert behind Giza and spend a few hours carving down the dunes, with the pyramids sitting on the skyline. After pickup you drive out to the soft sand hills on the desert edge of the city, where your guide fits you to a board and runs through the basics — how to stand, steer and stop — before you climb the crest and slide down. It is easy to pick up and genuinely fun, whether you ride standing like a snowboarder or sitting down, and you can walk back up for as many runs as you like. Between rides there is time to take in the desert panoramas, with the tips of the Great Pyramids visible across the sand, and to pause at a Bedouin tea stop for sweet mint tea in the quiet. The dunes are best in the cooler hours, so trips are timed toward late afternoon and the golden light before sunset when the sand glows and the temperature drops. Boards, instruction and a guide are all provided, and it suits beginners, teenagers and anyone after a bit of adventure. Wear closed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting sandy, and bring sunglasses, sun protection and a camera.
