Overview

You will stroll through the winding streets of Islamic Cairo and the Citadel, stopping at important historic monuments, buildings and places as you move through the area. The route continues to the Saladin Citadel, a medieval Islamic fortification that contains mosques and museums. Perched on the citadel’s summit, the 19th‑century Ottoman Mosque of Muhammad Ali stands as a prominent feature and represents Muhammad Ali’s efforts to erase traces of the Mameluke dynasty he replaced. Ironically, El‑Arafa necropolis — known in English as the “City of the Dead” — is the last stop in this part of the visit; it is the largest cemetery in Cairo in terms of area, has existed for more than 700 years, and today tens of thousands live among the tombs. You will then continue to Coptic Cairo to visit the Hanging Church, the Church of St. Barbara and the Ibn Ezra synagogue. Finally, you will return to Islamic Cairo where you can explore Khan El Khalili, Cairo’s old bazaar.
