Private Half-day Dendera Temple

Overview

You will travel north from Luxor to the archaeological complex at Dendera to explore the Temple of Hathor. The site sits within a mud-brick enclosure and includes major Ptolemaic foundations; parts of the complex are also said to date back to around 2250 BC. The temple is located a short distance from the Nile and is described as one of the more easily explored ancient Egyptian places of worship. As you move through the temple, you will see the famous Dendera Zodiac carved into a ceiling, including recognisable signs such as Libra (the balance) and Taurus (the bull). You will learn about Hathor as the goddess and patroness of love, music, dancing and joy, and see architectural and decorative features that reflect her cult. Along the way, your guide will point out details of the Ptolemaic construction and the site’s layout, helping you understand the temple’s history and significance within ancient Egyptian religion.
