Overview

Aswan is where the Nile is at its most beautiful, and there is no better way to feel it than under the white sail of a felucca. This half-day trip drifts out onto the river past Elephantine Island and the granite boulders of the First Cataract, the pace set by the wind rather than an engine. You land at one of the brightly painted Nubian villages that line the banks south of the city, where houses are washed in blues, ochres and pinks and doorways are framed with hand-painted patterns. A local family welcomes you for hibiscus tea and a taste of Nubian hospitality; you can have your hands decorated with henna, browse spices and handicrafts, and learn a little of the Nubian language and traditions that predate the pharaohs. There is the option to add a short camel ride along the sandy riverbank. Your guide shares the story of the Nubian people, whose ancestral lands were flooded by the building of the High Dam, and how their culture endures. Gentle, colourful and unhurried, it is the perfect counterpoint to Aswan's temples — an afternoon of sailing, warm welcomes and the softer, southern rhythm of the Nile.
