Overview

Two very different sides of Cairo in one half day: a state-of-the-art museum and a medieval fortress commanding the city. You begin at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat, whose centrepiece is the Royal Mummies Hall — a dim, purpose-built gallery where the preserved bodies of some of Egypt's greatest pharaohs, among them Ramesses II and Hatshepsut, lie in climate-controlled cases. It's a quiet, almost reverent space, and the museum's main galleries trace Egyptian civilisation across every era, from prehistory to the present, in a single sweeping story. From there you climb to the Citadel of Saladin, the great limestone stronghold raised in the twelfth century to defend Cairo against the Crusaders and the seat of Egypt's rulers for some 700 years. Within its walls stands the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the domed and minaretted 'Alabaster Mosque' whose silhouette defines the Cairo skyline, and from the ramparts the whole city spreads out below, all the way to the pyramids on a clear day. A licensed Egyptologist guide leads throughout and entrance tickets are arranged in advance. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
