Alexandria at its most relaxed — the royal gardens of Montaza and the long Mediterranean seafront that defines the city. Set on a low headland at the eastern end of Alexandria, the Montaza Palace grounds spread across hundreds of acres of pine and palm, laid out for Egypt's royal family in the early twentieth century. You stroll toward the Italianate Al-Haramlik Palace, its distinctive Florentine tower rising over the trees, and out to the little bridge and cove where the sea washes against the royal beach — one of the prettiest corners of the whole coast. From Montaza the tour follows the Corniche, the great curving boulevard that runs for miles along the waterfront, past faded Belle Époque façades, fishing boats and the Mediterranean stretching flat and blue to the horizon.
