Overview

Most visitors know Luxor's West Bank for its tombs; this three-hour quad safari shows you the desert above them. After hotel pickup you cross to the West Bank and reach a staging point near the village of Qurna, where a short briefing and a practice loop get you comfortable on an automatic quad bike. From there you ride out onto the desert plateau that rises behind the Theban necropolis, following sandy tracks up onto the escarpment. The reward is the view: from the high ground the whole Nile valley opens out below - a ribbon of green fields and palms against the bare hills, with the monuments of the West Bank scattered across the flats and the river glinting beyond. You stop at the best vantage points for photographs and to take in the quiet, a world away from the temple crowds down in the valley. The ride suits beginners as well as confident riders, with a lead guide setting a manageable pace and all safety gear provided. It is best in the cooler light of early morning or late afternoon, when the desert turns gold. Hotel pickup and drop-off, the quad, fuel and guide are all included; closed shoes and a scarf against the dust are worth bringing.
