Luxor to Denderah Half Day Private Tour: Hathor Temple at Denderah
A trusted partner experience, hand-picked and featured on This is Egypt.

Overview
You will be picked up by a professional tour guide and drive past picturesque villages and through the city of Qena to the Denderah Temple, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Built in the 1st century BC under Ptolemy VIII and Queen Cleopatra II, the temple is dedicated to Hathor, the goddess and mother of the pharaohs. As you move through the site, you will see rich reliefs and carvings that reflect her associations with maternity, love, music and the celestial. Inside the temple you will notice depictions of Hathor with the horns of the sacred cow supporting the solar disc, and holding an ankh and a scepter. You can visit the crypt, though it may not suit those who are claustrophobic. Two staircases lead to the roof, which is decorated with symbols for the 12 months of the year, and in one rooftop chapel you will find a copy of the famous Denderah Zodiac (the original is in the Louvre in Paris). The temple has been recently restored and cleaned, so walking its halls will give you a clear sense of ancient history and craftsmanship.
