Overview

Luxor's temples get the crowds, but its two riverside museums are where the detail lives, and this relaxed half day gives them the time they deserve. The Luxor Museum is small, well-lit and carefully curated – the opposite of Cairo's crowded halls. Its highlights include a wall of statues rescued from a cache found beneath the Luxor Temple courtyard, fine New Kingdom sculpture, and two royal mummies displayed with care. A short walk along the Corniche brings you to the Mummification Museum, built into the riverbank, which explains exactly how the ancient Egyptians preserved their dead: the tools, the natron and resins, the canopic jars for the organs, and the well-preserved mummy of a high priest. A guide ties the two together, so the process you learn in one museum makes sense of the bodies and coffins in the other. Between them you have the Nile Corniche itself, with feluccas working the water and the East Bank temples close at hand. Entrance tickets, hotel pickup and drop-off are included, which makes it an easy, largely indoor alternative to a full day among the temples – well suited to a hot afternoon or a slower pace.
