Overview

Trade the Red Sea reefs for the ancient capital of the pharaohs on a full day out to Luxor, the world's greatest open-air museum. It's an early start and a scenic drive north from Marsa Alam, but the reward is the concentrated heart of ancient Thebes in a single day. On the West Bank you descend into the rock-cut royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings, their corridors still bright with painted hieroglyphs — including, on many itineraries, the tomb of the boy-king Tutankhamun. Nearby, Hatshepsut's mortuary temple rises in dramatic terraces against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, built for the woman who ruled Egypt as pharaoh. You pause at the Colossi of Memnon, two weathered giants that are all that remains of a vanished temple, before crossing to the East Bank for Karnak — the vast temple complex whose Great Hypostyle Hall crowds 134 towering columns into a forest of stone. A licensed Egyptologist guide travels with you throughout to bring the sites to life. Everything is handled by private air-conditioned transfer with hotel pickup and drop-off, so all you do is watch Egypt's greatest monuments go by.
