Overview

The temples and tombs of ancient Thebes in a single day, without the overnight train or the long drive. An early domestic flight carries you south from Cairo to Luxor, where a licensed Egyptologist meets you at the airport for a full day on both banks of the Nile. On the West Bank you descend into the painted royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings — the burial ground of pharaohs including Tutankhamun and the Ramesside kings — and stand before the dramatic terraces of Hatshepsut's mortuary temple, built into the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, with the two seated Colossi of Memnon on the drive back across the floodplain. On the East Bank rises Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built, whose Great Hypostyle Hall packs 134 giant papyrus-shaped columns into a single stone forest. Lunch at a local restaurant is included, and an evening flight returns you to Cairo the same night. Everything — flights, transfers, guide and entrance fees — is arranged around the flight times so the day runs to plan. It is the most efficient way to see Egypt's greatest concentration of monuments when time in the country is short, trading a Nile cruise for a long, rewarding day among the ruins.
