Overview

Two of the Nile's most striking temples in a single day, driven from Aswan along the river road that the cruise ships take by water. First is Kom Ombo, unusual for being a double temple — its plan mirrored down the centre, one half dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god, the other to Horus the falcon — standing right on a bend of the Nile. A small adjoining museum holds mummified crocodiles recovered from the site, and the walls carry a famous relief of ancient surgical and medical instruments. From there the road runs north to Edfu and the Temple of Horus, the most completely preserved of all Egypt's temples: a towering pylon, a dark hypostyle hall, and a black granite falcon standing guard at the gate. Buried in sand for centuries, it was spared the worst of time. A licensed Egyptologist travels with you to read the reliefs and set each temple in its story, with a private air-conditioned car and all tickets arranged. It's an easy, rewarding day that captures the Ptolemaic Nile without committing to a multi-day cruise.
