Holy Day Tour: Coptic Cairo, Saint Simon Church and Virgin Mary tree

Overview

Spend a spiritual day exploring Coptic Cairo with an expert Coptic guide. You will visit the Matareya site where the Virgin Mary is said to have washed her garments and a balsam tree — now known as the Virgin’s Tree — sprouted. As you move through the old Coptic quarter, you will see Al Moallaqa (the Suspended Church) and the Hanging Church, built on the remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon. In the Hanging Church you will find a wood carving representing Jesus entering Jerusalem and about ninety rare icons in Basilican style. You will also visit Abu Serga Church, located near the Coptic Museum. There will be an opportunity for lunch at your own expense, after which you will continue to Mokattam Mountain to spend time at St Simon Church (the Cave Church). Along the way your guide will share historical and spiritual context, helping you understand the significance, architecture and iconography of each site.
