Overview

You will be picked up from your hotel to visit Coptic Cairo and its historic religious sites. In the heart of the area you will see the Hanging Church, which dates back to the 7th century and is built on top of one of the towers of the Roman fortress. Nearby you will find St George church, also set on a fortress tower and notable for its circular shape. As you move through the district, you will explore the Crept Church, or St Sergios church, which contains the cave that is said to have sheltered the Holy Family from the Romans. You will also visit St Barbara church, which was built in the 5th or 6th century. Along the way you will see the unique synagogue at the site of Ben Ezra, a place that local folklore says marks where baby Moses was found. The experience continues with a drive to the Monastery of St Simon, a complex of seven churches. The most important of these are the summer and winter churches, both hewn into the mountain and shaped like caves, offering a striking example of rock-cut religious architecture.
