Overview

This trip to Esna takes you off the beaten track to one of the oldest trade centres in Upper Egypt. You will visit the Temple of Khnum and see its 3,500-year-old doorway, a structure later used as a warehouse to store ivory, cotton and ostrich feathers. The much younger, merely 200-year-old Caravanserai sits next door. All of these sites are set in the middle of the Al-Qīsāriyya Market, a trading centre since medieval times. As you move through the area, you will see how the temple, the caravanserai and the market relate to centuries of local commerce and trade.
