Overview

You will be picked up from your hotel in Cairo for a full-day visit to the famous sites of El Fayoum. Travel out to the western desert in a 4WD for a safari around the protected areas of Wadi Hitan and Wadi El Rayan. Wadi Hitan (the Valley of the Whales) sits within the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area and was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of the 40‑million‑year‑old whale skeletons found there. Along the way to the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls you will stop at the so-called magic lake and its surrounding sand dunes, where you will have the chance to try sand boarding. The route also includes a visit to Mudawara Mountain before you reach Wadi al Rayan’s dramatic waterfalls. Wadi El Rayan is a natural depression made up of two lakes linked by Egypt’s only waterfalls, formed in 1970 when drainage water from Fayoum’s farmland overflowed. The day finishes with a BBQ lunch in Tunisa village, giving time to relax and enjoy the local setting before returning to Cairo.
