Overview

A wild day out from Cairo into the lakes, dunes and desert villages of the Fayoum depression, less than two hours from the city yet a world away from it. You drive first to Wadi El Rayan, a protected area of two linked desert lakes joined by Egypt's only waterfalls — modest cascades that spill between the upper and lower lake, ringed by reeds and open sand. From the escarpment above, the view runs out over the water and the dunes that spill down to meet it. The route takes in the pottery village of Tunis, perched on a ridge above Lake Qarun, where local studios turn out the glazed ceramics the village is known for. Depending on the day and conditions there is time at the Magic Lake, named for the way it changes colour through the day, and the wind-carved hill of Gebel Mudawara, with an optional extension toward the whale fossils of Wadi El Hitan. It is a landscape of contrasts — fresh water and desert, farmland and dunes — covered with a guide and a driver so you can take it in without navigating the tracks yourself. Bring a swimsuit if you fancy the water and shoes that cope with sand.
