Overview
West of Alexandria, the coast road runs out to the quiet desert town of El Alamein, where the tide of the Second World War turned in North Africa. This full-day trip walks you across that decisive 1942 battlefield, where Montgomery's Eighth Army halted Rommel's Afrika Korps. You begin at the El Alamein Military Museum, whose halls and outdoor yard display the tanks, artillery, uniforms and maps of the Allied and Axis forces, laying out how the two battles unfolded across this stretch of open desert. From there you visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery, where more than seven thousand headstones stand in silent rows beneath the sun, each marking a soldier who never went home. Nearby, the sombre German memorial — a fortress-like ossuary on a low rise above the sea — and the elegant Italian memorial honour the fallen of the other side, together making El Alamein one of the few places where all sides of a battle are remembered side by side. A knowledgeable guide tells the human stories behind the monuments, and a private air-conditioned vehicle handles the long coastal drive in comfort. It is a moving, reflective day, and a rare chance to stand on ground where the course of the war was changed.
