Overview

Travel north from Luxor to visit two of Egypt’s most complete temple sites, Abydos and the Temple of Hathor at Dendara. You’ll move between impressive ancient structures and their surviving decoration, gaining a clear sense of the religious life and monumental architecture of pharaonic Egypt. Abydos Temple is dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian god of the underworld; you’ll see the site that held deep spiritual significance in antiquity. The Temple of Hathor at Dendara may be the best preserved in Egypt, with full colour still visible on its walls, so you’ll get to view vivid painted reliefs and well-preserved carving that hint at the original appearance. Along the way you’ll experience two contrasting but complementary examples of temple art and design, each illustrating different aspects of ancient belief and craft.
