Overview
Dendera is the site of the temple of Goddess Hathor, Goddess of love, music, joy, motherhood, Lady of turquoise and Lady of the sycamore tree.The whole complex covers some 40,000 square meters and is surrounded by a hefty mudbrick enclosed wall. Dendera was inhabited in prehistory, a useful oasis on the banks of the Nile. It seems that pharaoh Pepi I (ca. 2250 BC) built on this site and evidence exists of a temple in the Eighteenth Dynasty (ca 1500 BC). The earliest extant building in the compound today is the mammisi raised by Nectanebo II – last of the native pharaohs (360–343 BC). We enjoyed the tour very much and would recommend as a day trip from Luxor. The temple is gorgeous and extremely well preserved. Miriam was our guide and she was very knowledgeable.
The drive from Luxor to Dendera is approximately 2hr , but it is worth it. The interior of the temple was very impressive. The guide was humble and explained all about the temple as much as he could with the time we had.
Unfortunately for the umpteenth time with viator, you book a tour in Italian and the day before the agency advises you that it is not available but there is only in English. Very annoying! For the rest the tour is going well, our guide was really good and very preparta, a peofessional archaeologist. But if you really need the guide in Italian be careful. For this 3 stars. For the destination and the guide I would have put 5.
