Dahab, Blue Hole & Colored Canyon — from Sharm

Overview

This full-day loop out of Sharm El Sheikh strings together three of South Sinai's landmarks: a slot canyon, a legendary dive site and a laid-back coastal town. You head north by road in the morning, then transfer to 4x4s for the run in to the Colored Canyon, a narrow, twisting gorge whose sandstone walls glow in bands of red, purple and gold where mineral deposits streak the rock. It is a walk-through more than a climb, cool and shaded even at midday, and one of the most photogenic short hikes in the peninsula. From there it is on to the Blue Hole, the deep sapphire sinkhole in the reef just north of Dahab; you will not dive it, but the shallow saddle beside it is superb for snorkelling over the coral. Lunch is at one of the cliff-side Bedouin cafes looking out over the water. The day finishes in Dahab itself, with free time to wander the palm-lined promenade, browse the little shops and have a mint tea by the sea before the drive back. Bring swimwear, sturdy shoes for the canyon, a hat and sunscreen, and your passport, as there may be checkpoints along the route. Transfers from your Sharm hotel are included.
