Overview

Old Cairo's Coptic quarter is one of the oldest continuously inhabited corners of the city — a compact tangle of lanes where churches, a synagogue and early Christian tradition sit within a few minutes' walk of one another. On foot with a local guide, you trace the story of Egypt's Christian community from its Roman-era foundations onward. The centrepiece is the Hanging Church, Al-Muallaqa, suspended above the gatehouse of a Roman fortress and reached by a long flight of stone steps, its timber ceiling shaped like the hull of an ark. Nearby stands the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, Abu Serga, built over a crypt where tradition holds the Holy Family sheltered during their flight into Egypt. A short walk away, the Ben Ezra Synagogue — the oldest in Cairo — occupies a former church and is tied to the legend of the infant Moses found among the reeds. You'll pass through the quarter of the Coptic Museum, with its icons and manuscripts, as the walk winds along narrow, shaded alleys. It's an easy, flat route that rewards a slow pace and a guide who can read the symbolism worked into the stone.
