Overview

One of Sinai's most striking desert walks, reached on an easy day out from Dahab. A 4x4 carries you north through the mountains toward Nuweiba, leaving the tarmac for a rough desert track that drops you at the mouth of the Colored Canyon. From there you walk in on foot, following a dry riverbed that narrows into a corridor of sandstone barely wider than your shoulders in places. The walls climb high overhead, banded and swirled with iron reds, ochres, purples and gold — the mineral colouring that gives the canyon its name — sculpted by flash floods into smooth curves, ledges and natural steps. It is a gentle hike rather than a climb, cool in the shade of the rock even at midday, with your guide pointing out the formations and the way the light shifts along the walls. Emerging from the canyon, you sit down to a Bedouin lunch in a village or desert camp — simple grilled food, bread and sweet tea in the shade. The drive back to Dahab crosses open desert with the Sinai peaks all around.
