Overview

Rise 187 metres above the capital for the single best view in Cairo. Standing on Gezira Island in Zamalek, the Cairo Tower is the city's tallest landmark — a slender concrete shaft wrapped in a latticework screen inspired by the ancient lotus flower. A lift carries you to the open-air observation deck at the top, where the whole sprawling megacity unfolds in every direction: the Nile curving silver below, the island districts and bridges, the minarets and rooftops of old Cairo, and, on a clear day, the faint silhouettes of the Giza pyramids on the western horizon. It is a rare chance to grasp the sheer scale of Cairo in a single sweep, and to see how the river shapes the city around it. Time your visit for late afternoon and you can watch the light soften and the sunset spread over the skyline before the city lights flicker on below. A skip-the-line ticket means no waiting for the lift, and your host helps you pick out the landmarks and the best angles for photos. There is a café and a revolving restaurant at the summit if you want to linger over the view. Compact, easy and unforgettable, it is one of Cairo's simplest pleasures.
