Overview

Dahab's coastline hides some of the Red Sea's most famous underwater scenery, and this day reaches it the way locals do: by jeep along the coast road north of town, stopping at a string of shore-access reefs rather than heading out by boat. You warm up at the Three Pools, a set of shallow, sheltered turquoise lagoons perfect for easing in, checking gear and finding your rhythm in the water. From there you move on to the Bells and the Blue Hole itself, a near-perfect circular sinkhole dropping over a hundred metres, ringed by a shallow coral reef alive with anthias, butterflyfish and the occasional turtle. Snorkellers float over the reef rim and the lagoon; certified divers descend along the outer wall with a guide, while first-timers can try a supervised intro dive in calm water. Your guide keeps things safe and unhurried and, importantly, keeps everyone to the shallow reef rather than the deep shaft that gives the site its reputation. Between sessions there is a relaxed Bedouin-style lunch at a shaded cafe looking out over the water. All the snorkel and dive gear is provided, so you just bring a swimsuit, a towel and sunscreen. It suits everyone from confident swimmers to logged divers.
