Overview

Follow the Nile south from Luxor for a full day among two of the river's finest temples, ending in the easy calm of Aswan. Travelling by private air-conditioned car with a licensed Egyptologist, your first stop is Edfu and the Temple of Horus — one of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt, its towering pylon, colonnaded court and dark inner sanctuary looking much as they did when the last hieroglyphs were carved. You continue along the river road to Kom Ombo, the unusual double temple standing right on the Nile bank and shared between Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the elder; the site's reliefs of ancient surgical instruments and its mummified crocodiles are among the trip's highlights. Reaching Aswan, you take in the Aswan High Dam, the vast engineering project that tamed the Nile's flood and created Lake Nasser, with wide views over the water. Between stops the drive traces green riverbanks, palm groves and villages that have farmed this land for millennia. With entry tickets arranged, a knowledgeable guide throughout and a comfortable private vehicle, it is an unhurried way to reach Aswan and its temples and be back in Luxor by evening.
