Overview

At the Temple of Khnum in Esna, you will explore a site dedicated to the creator god Khnum, who was believed to fashion both men and women. In his aspect as Khnum-Hapi, he was thought to revive the Nile’s springs each year and so bring about the annual flood. You will also learn that his wife Menhit, the city goddess Nephu, and the goddesses Heka and Neith were worshipped here. The exposed temple lies nine metres below modern street level in a hollowed-out depression in the city of Esna. You will descend the stairs that lead to the temple entrance and view the surviving parts of the building. The sections visible today date from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, so as you move through the site you will encounter remains from those eras and gain a sense of the temple’s long history and religious significance.
