Overview

When the sun drops, medieval Cairo comes alive. This evening walk leads you down Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street, a kilometre-long open-air museum of Fatimid and Mamluk architecture that glows amber under floodlights once the daytime crowds thin out. Your Egyptologist guide reads the facades as you go: the soaring minarets of the Qalawun complex, the delicate stone lacework of the Al-Aqmar mosque, and the sabil-kuttab fountains where water was once given freely to passers-by. From here you slip into the lanes of Khan el-Khalili, the great bazaar that has traded since the fourteenth century, past coppersmiths, spice sacks, lantern stalls and perfume-oil sellers. The evening pauses at El Fishawy, the storied cafe tucked in an alley off the souk, for a glass of sweet mint tea or a shisha among mirrors and brass. Your guide handles directions and haggling tips so you can wander without the hustle, and points out the good workshops from the tourist traps. It is Islamic Cairo at its most atmospheric — call to prayer echoing off the stone, shopfronts spilling light onto the cobbles, and the city's oldest quarter unhurried and cool after dark.
