Overview

Abu Simbel is Egypt's most spectacular temple, but reaching it usually means a pre-dawn convoy and hours of desert road. This trip does it the easy way: a short morning flight south from Aswan lands you beside Lake Nasser, where Ramesses II's Great Temple rises from the rock, its four seated colossi staring out over the water. Inside, a hall of Osiride pillars leads back to the sanctuary, aligned so that twice a year the sun reaches the gods carved at its heart. Next to it stands the smaller temple Ramesses dedicated to his queen, Nefertari, and the goddess Hathor — one of the few in Egypt where the wife appears the same size as the king. An Egyptologist guide meets you on site to explain the carvings, the story of the temples' 1960s rescue from the rising Nile, and how the entire complex was cut apart and lifted to higher ground. After time among the reliefs you fly back to Aswan the same morning, with the whole day still ahead of you. Transfers between your Aswan hotel and the airport are included at both ends, so the logistics are handled from door to door.
