Overview

Egypt's two greatest Nubian monuments in one short escape from the capital. You fly south from Cairo to Aswan, then travel on to Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II carved four sixty-five-foot statues of himself into a sandstone cliff more than 3,000 years ago. The whole complex — the Great Temple and the smaller temple Ramesses dedicated to his queen Nefertari — was cut from the rock and lifted block by block to higher ground in the 1960s to escape the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Back in Aswan you visit the Temple of Philae, the graceful island sanctuary of the goddess Isis, and stand atop the Aswan High Dam, the vast structure that reshaped the river and created the lake behind it. At the granite quarries you see the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying where it cracked before it could be raised. A licensed Egyptologist travels with you throughout, and internal flights, transfers and hotel nights are handled so the days flow without logistics. It is the classic way to reach the far south of Egypt without the long overland drive, pairing the country's most awe-inspiring temples with the calm of Aswan's stretch of the Nile.
