PADI Discover Scuba Diving

Your first breath underwater — no experience, no commitment

Discover Scuba Diving is the easiest way to find out what breathing underwater is really like. After a short briefing on the few safety rules that matter, a professional instructor takes you into shallow, calm water and stays at your side for the whole dive. There is no exam and no certification — just a real, guided dive on a Red Sea reef. It is the single most popular first step for holidaymakers in Egypt, and almost everyone who tries it books a proper course next.

What you’ll learn

  • How to breathe underwater comfortably on scuba equipment
  • A handful of essential safety rules and hand signals
  • Basic skills in shallow water before you head to the reef
  • A real guided dive with an instructor at your side the whole time

Who it’s for

Complete beginners, families with children 10+, and anyone unsure whether diving is for them before committing to a full course.

Where to do it in Egypt

Offered almost everywhere on the Red Sea. Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Dahab all have sheltered house reefs perfect for a first dive; Dahab's calm bays are especially gentle for nervous first-timers.

Common questions

Do I need to be able to swim?

You should be comfortable in water. Basic swimming ability is expected, but Discover Scuba is done in shallow, controlled conditions with an instructor holding your hand throughout.

Does it count towards a certification?

It isn't a certification itself, but most centres credit a Discover Scuba dive towards your PADI or SSI Open Water course if you continue within a set period — ask us and we'll confirm with the centre.

How deep will I go?

Up to about 12 metres, and always with an instructor. Most first dives stay shallower than that.
