Egypt is one of the great long-haul trips for American travelers, and it is more straightforward to organize than most people expect. From the US, the classic itinerary pairs Cairo and the Giza pyramids with a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, either as a land-only package you fly into yourself or as an all-in escorted tour. Below is what actually matters before you book: how to get there, the visa rules for US passport holders (including the new Cairo airport system that started on 1 August 2026), what tours cost, and when to go. Prices here are ranges to plan around, not quotes, so always verify the live figure before you pay.

Getting there: flights from the US

EgyptAir flies nonstop to Cairo (CAI) from New York JFK and Newark (EWR), with a block time of roughly 10 hours 30 minutes and something like 10 nonstop New York-Cairo departures a week. From most other US cities you connect once, through a European hub (Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways) or a Gulf carrier (Emirates, Qatar, Etihad). Round-trip economy from New York tends to start around $735 on EgyptAir nonstop, with one-stop carriers such as Turkish ($700) or ITA ($637) sometimes coming in lower. There is no US nonstop to the Red Sea, so Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) mean a further connection through Cairo or Europe. Fares move constantly, so treat these as a starting band and verify.

Visa for US citizens

US citizens need a visa, but getting one is easy. You have three routes. The simplest advance option is the official e-visa at around $25 single-entry or $60 multi-entry, each stay up to 30 days, applied for at the government portal visa2egypt.gov.eg only, never a third-party reseller charging inflated fees. The long-standing visa on arrival is about $30, paid in cash US dollars at Cairo and other major airports. New from 1 August 2026, Cairo Airport also has a self-service digital visa at $36 (including a $6 service fee) paid by card. Whichever you choose, your passport should be valid at least six months beyond entry with a blank page or two.

What a tour costs

The US market skews toward multi-day escorted cultural tours and premium river cruises, and most are sold land-only, meaning your international airfare is quoted separately. As a benchmark, Intrepid's land-only per-person prices run from about $1,545 for an 8-day "Egypt Adventure" and ~$1,740 for the 15-day "Explore Egypt," up to ~$3,790 for a 12-day "Egypt Experience" and ~$5,495 for 9-day "Premium Egypt"; a budget 18-to-35s trip starts near $795. Luxury Nile cruise lines such as Uniworld, Viking and Abercrombie & Kent sit materially higher. Add flights, your visa, tips and a few paid extras on top. Verify current pricing and what each package includes before booking.

Best time to go

The comfortable sightseeing window is October to April, with pleasant 20-30C days; December to February is the busiest and priciest peak. If you want milder weather with thinner crowds, March to May or September to November are the sweet spots, while June to August is genuinely hot. US demand clusters around spring break, summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year, so peak-season cruises sell out well ahead. If you travel during Ramadan (dates shift each year), expect reduced restaurant and shop hours.

What to book

Most first-timers want Cairo and Giza plus a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise, which is exactly what the tours in the grid below cover. Before you pick one, read our Nile cruise guide to understand the routes, ship classes and what a typical sailing includes, and our Grand Egyptian Museum guide to plan your Giza days. Match the itinerary length to your flight time, confirm whether airfare is included, and book cash-heavy extras and tips knowing Egypt still runs largely on cash away from hotels.

Before you go

Check CDC guidance early; Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly advised for Egypt, and Hepatitis A needs about two weeks to take effect, so see a clinic ideally a month out. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover is strongly recommended, since US health plans typically do not cover care overseas. Carry clean, newer US dollar bills for the on-arrival visa and larger tips.

Häufige Fragen

Do US citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. US citizens need a visa but can get one easily. You can apply for an e-visa in advance at the official government portal visa2egypt.gov.eg (about $25 single-entry or $60 multi-entry, each stay up to 30 days), pay roughly $30 in cash US dollars for a visa on arrival at Cairo and other major airports, or, new from 1 August 2026, use Cairo Airport's self-service digital visa at $36 (including a $6 fee) paid by card. Your passport should be valid at least six months beyond entry. Verify current fees before you travel.

How long is the flight from the US to Egypt?

EgyptAir flies nonstop from New York JFK and Newark (EWR) to Cairo in roughly 10 hours 30 minutes, with around 10 nonstop New York-Cairo departures a week. From most other US cities you connect once through a European hub (Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways) or a Gulf carrier (Emirates, Qatar, Etihad), which adds several hours depending on the layover.

How much does an Egypt tour cost from the US?

Most US-sold tours are land-only, so international airfare is quoted separately. As a benchmark, Intrepid's land-only per-person prices run from about $1,545 for an 8-day trip and ~$1,740 for 15 days, up to ~$3,790 for 12 days and ~$5,495 for a 9-day premium tour; a budget option starts near $795. Luxury Nile cruises (Uniworld, Viking, Abercrombie & Kent) cost materially more. Add flights (round-trips from New York often start around $735), your visa and tips. Verify live pricing before booking.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

October to April offers the best sightseeing weather, with pleasant 20-30C days; December to February is the busiest and most expensive peak. For milder weather and fewer crowds, aim for March to May or September to November. June to August is the hottest. Peak-season Nile cruises book out well ahead, and during Ramadan (dates shift yearly) some restaurants and shops keep shorter hours.

How many days do you need in Egypt?

It depends on how much you want to see. Popular US-market packages range from about 8 days for a core Cairo, Giza and Nile cruise loop up to 15 days for a fuller itinerary, with 9-to-12-day trips a common middle ground. Given the long flight from the US, most travelers build in at least a week to a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise plus time in Cairo. Match the length to your flight and budget.

Is Egypt safe for US travelers?

Egypt is a well-established destination for American travelers, centered on Cairo and Nile cruise cultural itineraries served by escorted tours. Check the latest US State Department guidance at travel.state.gov before you go, follow CDC health advice (Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly recommended, ideally a clinic visit about a month ahead), and take out comprehensive travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover, since US health plans usually do not cover care overseas.
