For Italian travellers, Egypt is close: a short flight to a warm sea, or a culture trip to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan without a long-haul day in the air. Most Italians reach the Red Sea on a charter bundled inside a volo+hotel package, but the country is just as good for a Nile itinerary. This page covers the practical bits — flights, visa, cost and timing — so you can book one of the tours below with confidence.

Getting there from Italy

Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Cairo (CAI) is a short hop, about 3h30 over roughly 2,500 km, flown by Air Cairo, EgyptAir, Neos and Nesma, with ITA Airways also in the market. Low-cost scheduled options on Milan–Cairo include Wizz Air alongside Ryanair, easyJet, Aegean and ITA. For the Red Sea, direct flights from Milan to Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) and Marsa Alam (RMF) typically run about 4–5 hours, and Neos is the principal charter carrier, usually sold as flight plus seven nights. Scheduled Milan–Cairo lead-in fares appear from about €138 round-trip on meta-search, but that is an indicative figure, not a quote, so verify. Remember that most Red Sea leisure travel is charter seats inside a package rather than point-to-point tickets.

Visas for Italian passport holders

Italian citizens need a tourist visa. The simplest route is the official online e-visa through visa2egypt.gov.eg — avoid third-party markup sites. The e-visa costs about US$25 single-entry (multiple-entry around US$60); single-entry is valid 90 days from issue with a maximum 30-day stay, and multiple-entry six months. Visa on arrival is available at major airports. From 1 August 2026, Cairo is piloting a digital visa on arrival — a QR code replacing the paper sticker — costing US$36 total (US$30 fee plus US$6 issuance), with paper stickers still available during the pilot. Your passport must be valid at least six months from entry. Red Sea resort-only stays have sometimes allowed a free stamp confined to the resort zone, but rules change, so confirm before relying on it.

What tours cost

The dominant Italian product is the volo+hotel package, overwhelmingly Red Sea all-inclusive at Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam, sold by Alpitour, Eden Viaggi, Turisanda and aggregators like Piratinviaggio. These typically bundle Neos flights plus seven nights all-inclusive, with per-room discounts on the flight-plus-seven-nights deals. Marsa Alam is marketed for quieter beaches and reef; Sharm for a fuller resort scene; Hurghada and Berenice are also offered. Specific 2026 price bands shift by season and hotel, so verify on the operator sites. If you want culture rather than beach, a Cairo–Luxor–Aswan tour is the alternative to a resort week.

When to go

For Cairo, Luxor and Aswan sightseeing, November to February is the best window, with spring and autumn also mild. The Red Sea coast is best in spring and autumn before the heat peaks, and sea temperatures stay pleasant for snorkelling and diving roughly March to November. Summer (June–August) is very hot inland — often above 40°C in Luxor and Aswan — so it suits a beach holiday rather than temple touring, and it coincides with Italian school holidays and peak Red Sea demand.

What to book

First-timers after culture should book a Cairo-and-Nile-cruise combination: Giza and the Egyptian Museum, then Luxor to Aswan by boat. The cruise is the centrepiece, so read our Nile cruise guide before choosing a ship or a month. If you would rather have sea and reef, a Sharm or Marsa Alam package is the classic Italian choice. The tours below are bookable now.

Money and health

Egypt is largely cash-based, at roughly 50–52 EGP per USD in 2026. Cards work in upscale hotels, restaurants and for tours, but carry small Egyptian notes for markets, taxis, street food and tipping; small euro notes are accepted for larger tips though recipients lose on exchange. No vaccinations are mandatory from the EU, but Hepatitis A is strongly recommended, and travel medical insurance covering emergency treatment and repatriation is strongly advised. Check viaggiaresicuri.it for current notices before booking.

Häufige Fragen

Do Italian citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. Italian citizens need a tourist visa. The easiest route is the official online e-visa at visa2egypt.gov.eg, about US$25 single-entry (multiple-entry around US$60), with single-entry valid 90 days from issue and a 30-day maximum stay. Visa on arrival is available at major airports, and from 1 August 2026 Cairo is piloting a digital QR-code visa on arrival at US$36 total. Verify on the official portal.

How long is the flight from Italy to Egypt?

Milan Malpensa to Cairo is about 3h30 over roughly 2,500 km, flown by Air Cairo, EgyptAir, Neos, Nesma and ITA Airways. Direct flights from Milan to the Red Sea resort airports of Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam typically run about 4–5 hours, mostly on charter seats bundled inside a volo+hotel package.

How much does an Egypt trip cost from Italy?

The classic Italian product is a volo+hotel package, usually Neos flights plus seven nights all-inclusive on the Red Sea via Alpitour, Eden Viaggi or Turisanda, with per-room discounts on the flight-plus-seven-nights deals. Scheduled Milan–Cairo lead-in fares appear from about €138 round-trip on meta-search. Specific 2026 package bands shift by season and hotel, so verify on the operator's site.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

For Cairo, Luxor and Aswan culture, November to February is the best window, with spring and autumn also mild. The Red Sea is best in spring and autumn, and sea temperatures stay pleasant for diving roughly March to November. Summer (June–August) is very hot inland, above 40°C, so it suits a beach holiday rather than temple touring.

How many days do you need for Egypt?

For a Red Sea package the standard is seven nights. For a culture trip, plan at least 7–8 days so you can combine a few days in Cairo for Giza and the Egyptian Museum with a Luxor–Aswan Nile cruise. Italian operators sell both beach weeks and multi-city cultural circuits, so match the length to whether you want sea or sightseeing.

Is Egypt safe, and what should you book?

Check the Foreign Ministry advisory at viaggiaresicuri.it for current notices, and take out travel medical insurance covering emergency treatment and repatriation. For a first culture trip, book a Cairo-plus-Nile-cruise itinerary covering Giza, Luxor and Aswan; read our Nile cruise guide before choosing a ship. For sea and reef, a Sharm or Marsa Alam package is the classic choice.
