Egypt is one of the best-value winter-sun and culture trips within reach of Ireland, but it pays to understand the flight picture before you book. EgyptAir runs a direct Dublin-Cairo service, which makes the classic culture-and-Nile trip straightforward. The Red Sea is trickier: there is no year-round direct Dublin-Hurghada flight, so beach holidays connect through Europe or ride seasonal winter-sun charters arranged by Irish operators. Because of that, Irish demand leans toward escorted cultural tours and Nile cruises rather than pure beach weeks. Here is how to plan it, what it costs, and what to sort before you fly.

Flights from Dublin

Dublin (DUB) is the primary Irish gateway. EgyptAir is the only carrier flying non-stop to Cairo, about five times a week, on an average flight time of roughly 5h25. Return DUB-Cairo fares have been advertised from around 236 euro on aggregators, though real pricing varies by season. Connecting options run via European, Gulf and Turkish hubs on carriers such as Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines.

For the Red Sea, no airline currently offers a scheduled year-round non-stop Dublin-Hurghada. You connect via carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet, Pegasus, Air Cairo or Aer Lingus, or you take a seasonal winter-sun charter or package. Aggregator return fares to Hurghada on connecting itineraries have appeared from around 149 euro. Charter and package supply concentrates in the autumn-to-spring winter-sun window rather than summer, so plan around that.

Visa for Irish travellers

Irish citizens are not visa-exempt but, as EU nationals, qualify for both the e-visa and visa-on-arrival. Apply only through the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, and avoid third-party sites that overcharge three to five times. After the 27 April 2026 increase, the single-entry tourist e-visa is reported at 30 USD (65 USD multiple-entry), though some sources still cite the older 25/60 figures, so confirm on the portal. Single-entry is valid about three months from approval for a stay of up to 30 days.

From 1 August 2026, Cairo Airport launched a digital visa-on-arrival for roughly 46 eligible nationalities including EU citizens: a QR code generated before departure, in flight or on arrival, at a total 36 USD (30 fee plus 6 issuance), with the QR expiring 48 hours after generation. It is a pilot, so paper stickers remain available, and airports like Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Luxor keep the paper visa-on-arrival process.

Packages and prices

With no direct Red Sea flight, Irish demand skews toward escorted cultural tours and Nile cruises. Sunway.ie is a mainstream Irish operator selling Egypt Nile-cruise holidays for 2026/2027, and TUI River Cruises offers Nile cruises with cruise-and-stay extensions in Luxor and Hurghada. Typical products include 8-day Hurghada-plus-Nile-cruise combos taking in Luxor, Aswan, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, and 10-day Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Hurghada culture-plus-beach itineraries. Mid-range Egypt tours from Ireland are quoted at roughly 1,200-2,000 euro per person for 8-10 days including flights and touring. A standalone 4-day, 3-night Aswan-Luxor cruise segment is advertised from about 550 USD. Verify all pricing directly.

Our Nile cruise guide explains routes, ship standards and what a good cruise itinerary should include, which is useful before you commit.

Best time to go

Peak Irish demand is the winter-sun escape: December to February in Egypt is mild and sunny at around 20-23C on the Red Sea, ideal for dodging the Irish winter. For combined culture and beach, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) give the best balance of comfortable temperatures and warm sea. July-August is very hot at 35-40C and less comfortable for sightseeing or cruising. Irish mid-term breaks (late October, mid-February), Easter and Christmas/New Year are the family-booking peaks.

Money and health

Egypt is cash-heavy: cards work at resorts, upscale hotels and for tours, but bring Egyptian pounds for souks, taxis, street food and tipping. ATMs give near-interbank rates but often cap withdrawals around 5,000-10,000 EGP a day. Budget roughly 50-80 USD per person per day in cash on cruise and tour trips for tips and incidentals. No vaccines are legally required, though Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly recommended; arrange them four to six weeks ahead and check DFA travel advice before you book.

Häufige Fragen

Is there a direct flight from Dublin to Egypt?

Yes to Cairo. EgyptAir flies non-stop Dublin-Cairo about five times a week at roughly 5h25. For the Red Sea, there is no year-round direct Dublin-Hurghada flight, so beach trips connect via European, Gulf or Turkish hubs or use seasonal winter-sun charters arranged by Irish operators. Verify current schedules at booking.

Do Irish citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. Irish citizens are not visa-exempt but, as EU nationals, qualify for both the e-visa and visa-on-arrival. The single-entry tourist e-visa is reported at 30 USD after the 27 April 2026 increase, via the official visa2egypt.gov.eg portal only. From 1 August 2026 Cairo Airport also offers a 36 USD digital QR visa-on-arrival. Verify current fees on the portal.

How much does an Egypt tour from Ireland cost?

Mid-range Egypt tours from Ireland are quoted at roughly 1,200-2,000 euro per person for 8-10 days including flights and touring. As a cruise-only reference, a 4-day, 3-night Aswan-Luxor Nile cruise is advertised from about 550 USD. Pricing varies by season and operator, so verify directly with sellers such as Sunway.ie.

Can I fly directly from Dublin to the Red Sea?

Not on a year-round scheduled non-stop. Dublin-Hurghada is sold either as connecting flights via carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet, Pegasus, Air Cairo or Aer Lingus, or as a seasonal winter-sun charter package. Connecting return fares have appeared from around 149 euro. Charter supply concentrates in the autumn-to-spring winter-sun window.

When is the best time to visit Egypt from Ireland?

December to February is the peak winter-sun window, mild and sunny at around 20-23C on the Red Sea. For combined culture and beach, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best balance of comfortable air and warm sea. July-August is very hot at 35-40C and less comfortable for sightseeing and cruising.

What kinds of Egypt trips do Irish travellers usually book?

Because there is no direct Red Sea flight, Irish demand skews toward escorted cultural tours and Nile cruises. Common products are 8-day Hurghada-plus-Nile-cruise combos covering Luxor, Aswan, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, and 10-day Cairo-Luxor-Aswan-Hurghada culture-and-beach itineraries. Sunway.ie and TUI River Cruises are common sellers.
