Egypt is a long haul from Australia, so most travellers make it count: a proper escorted trip built around Cairo and a Nile cruise rather than a quick beach week. There are no direct flights, but the connections through the Gulf are smooth and the payoff — Giza, the Valley of the Kings, Luxor and Aswan — is worth the hours. This page covers how you get there, the visa, what a tour costs and when to go, so you can book one of the itineraries below.

Getting there from Australia

There are no direct flights from Australia to Egypt. The most efficient routings connect through the Gulf hubs into Cairo (CAI): Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi. Fastest journey times run roughly 19–21 hours from Sydney; other routings are longer, with Adelaide around 19h30, Melbourne about 25h, Sydney about 26h30 and Brisbane about 28h on non-optimal connections. EgyptAir does not fly from Australia directly, though it can appear on the final Gulf-hub-to-Cairo leg. There is no Australian charter market to the Red Sea, so Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are reached via Cairo on domestic legs or via a Gulf hub. Meta-search lead-in fares start from about AU$732, with Melbourne from around AU$1,315 and Sydney from about AU$1,374 return; premium and peak Etihad economy examples run AU$2,480–3,948. Verify before booking.

Visas for Australian passport holders

Australian citizens need a tourist visa. You can apply for the official online e-visa before departure or get a visa on arrival at major airports (Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Luxor). The e-visa costs about US$25 single-entry or US$60 multiple-entry (valid six months); single-entry is valid 90 days from issue with a maximum 30-day stay, and the approval is usually emailed within about 3–7 business days. From 1 August 2026, arrivals at Cairo Airport use a digital visa on arrival — a QR code generated before departure replacing the paper sticker — costing US$36 total (the US$30 fee plus a US$6 issuing fee, roughly AU$51), with paper stickers still available during the pilot. Use only the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, and keep your passport valid at least six months beyond entry. Smartraveller notes rules can change at short notice, so confirm before you fly.

What tours cost

The Australian market skews to escorted and small-group tours combining Cairo with a Luxor–Aswan Nile cruise, not beach charters. Bunnik Tours, based in Adelaide, sells a 9-night "Highlights of Egypt" from about AU$10,395 per person twin-share, including return international flights, daily breakfast and a Nile cruise. Intrepid runs group tours popular with Australians, with land-only budget itineraries — for example a 9-day Cairo, sleeper train and Nile cruise — from around US$1,009 land-only. Note the difference: some prices include your flights and some are land-only, so read the inclusions before comparing. The 2026 Luxor–Aswan cruise season is reported sailing at high or full capacity, so book ahead.

When to go

The best window is the cooler winter, November to February, with mild 15–25°C days ideal for Cairo, Luxor and Aswan and for Nile cruising. This is peak season, with the biggest crowds and highest prices. The shoulder months of October–November and March–April bring warm but not extreme weather with fewer crowds, often the best value. Summer (June–August) is very hot inland, frequently above 40°C. Note that the mild Egyptian winter coincides with the Australian summer school holidays, so many Australians travel over the Egyptian peak.

What to book

For a first trip, an escorted Cairo-and-Nile-cruise tour is the natural choice: Giza and the Egyptian Museum, then the temples between Luxor and Aswan by boat. The cruise is the heart of the trip, so read our Nile cruise guide before picking a ship or a season. With cruises sailing near capacity in 2026, booking early matters. The tours below are bookable now.

Money and health

Egypt is largely cash-based, at roughly 50–52 EGP per USD in 2026. Cards work in upscale hotels, restaurants and for tours, but carry small Egyptian notes for markets, taxis, street food and all tipping; small US dollar notes are often preferred for larger tips to guides, drivers and cruise crew. No vaccinations are mandatory, but Hepatitis A is strongly recommended — see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks out. Smartraveller advises comprehensive travel insurance and checking current advice before you go.

Häufige Fragen

Do Australians need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. Australian citizens can apply for the official online e-visa before departure at visa2egypt.gov.eg, about US$25 single-entry or US$60 multiple-entry, or get a visa on arrival at major airports. Single-entry allows a 30-day stay. From 1 August 2026 Cairo Airport uses a digital QR-code visa on arrival at US$36 total (about AU$51). Keep your passport valid six months beyond entry and verify current rules.

How long is the flight from Australia to Egypt?

There are no direct flights. The fastest routings connect through the Gulf — Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi — at roughly 19–21 hours from Sydney. Others are longer: Adelaide about 19h30, Melbourne about 25h, Sydney about 26h30, Brisbane about 28h on non-optimal connections. There is no Australian charter to the Red Sea, so those airports are reached via Cairo or a Gulf hub.

How much does an Egypt tour from Australia cost?

Escorted trips including international flights sit high: Bunnik Tours sells a 9-night "Highlights of Egypt" from about AU$10,395 per person twin-share, with return flights, daily breakfast and a Nile cruise. Land-only budget options are far cheaper — Intrepid runs a 9-day Cairo, sleeper train and Nile cruise from around US$1,009 land-only. Check whether flights are included before comparing, and verify current prices.

When is the best time to visit Egypt from Australia?

The best window is the cooler winter, November to February (mild 15–25°C), ideal for Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Nile cruising — but it is peak season with the biggest crowds and highest prices, and it overlaps the Australian summer school holidays. October–November and March–April are warm, quieter and often better value. Summer (June–August) is very hot inland, above 40°C.

How many days do you need in Egypt?

Given the 19-hour-plus journey, most Australians spend at least 9–12 days to make the trip worthwhile. A typical escorted shape combines several days in Cairo for Giza and the Egyptian Museum with a Luxor–Aswan Nile cruise, sometimes adding a sleeper train. Longer itineraries spread the cost of the long-haul flights over more sightseeing days.

Is Egypt safe, and what should I book first?

Smartraveller advises comprehensive travel insurance and checking current advice before you travel, as conditions can change at short notice. For a first trip, book an escorted Cairo-plus-Nile-cruise tour covering Giza, Luxor and Aswan. With 2026 cruises sailing near capacity, book early, and read our Nile cruise guide before choosing a ship. The tours below are bookable now.
