Egypt is the leading destination for Russian holidaymakers in 2026, and the reason is simple: direct flights to the Red Sea are fully operational again, arrivals are up around 21 percent year-on-year, and some operators report booking growth of up to 40 percent. If you are flying from Moscow or one of a dozen regional cities, a beach week in Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh has rarely been easier to reach. Below is a practical guide to flights, visas, prices and timing, plus how to pair a resort stay with the cultural side of Egypt.
Getting there: flights and charters
Direct service from Russia serves Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm El-Sheikh (SSH), with newer routes opening to Borg El Arab/Alexandria and El Alamein. Carriers reported on the network include Aeroflot, Rossiya and Air Cairo, across roughly 21 routes, and Air Cairo launched its first El Alamein–Moscow (Sheremetyevo) flight in August 2026. Charter density is high: direct charters to Sharm and Hurghada have been flying daily through the winter 2026 season. Flight time from Moscow to either Red Sea airport is roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
One important caveat. These Red Sea routes were suspended after the 2015 Metrojet incident over Sinai and only progressively restored between 2021 and 2025. The 2026 status is "resumed and expanding," but this remains a security-sensitive route history. Always confirm current operators, frequencies and any fresh advisories before you book.
Visas: e-Visa, VOA and the Sinai permit
Russian citizens are not visa-exempt. The two standard routes are the Egypt e-Visa, applied for online in advance, or a Visa on Arrival at the airport. The e-Visa runs about USD 25 for single entry (valid 90 days from issue, one entry, up to a 30-day stay); a multiple-entry version is valid 180 days. Apply only through the official portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg to avoid third-party markups.
From 1 August 2026, Cairo airport began piloting a digital Visa on Arrival: a QR code costing USD 36 total (a USD 30 fee plus USD 6 issuance), generated up to 48 hours before travel. It applies to Cairo only for now; Hurghada and Sharm keep the paper sticker process. Whether Russian nationals are on the roughly 46-country eligible list is not yet confirmed, so verify. Note too that the free South Sinai entry permit (around 15 days) covers only the Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resort zones; a full visa is required to reach Cairo or Luxor.
Packages and cost
Russia has a mature outbound machine: Coral Travel, Anex Tour, Pegas Touristik, Intourist, Biblio-Globus, TEZ Tour and Fun&Sun all run Egypt charter programs, typically 7, 10 or 14 nights all-inclusive with the flight bundled in. As a rough anchor, Coral Travel has advertised 7-night Hurghada packages with direct Moscow flights from around EUR 777 for two people all-inclusive, while Anex has listed Sharm/Hurghada tours from around USD 1,320 for two. Treat these as season-dependent guide prices and verify live before booking.
Best time to go
The Red Sea resorts are at their best from October to April, with daytime temperatures around 22–28°C and comfortable evenings. Divers get the clearest water from November to April, with 20–30 metre visibility and January–February at the heart of the window. Summer (June–August) is hot, peaking near 35°C, but sea breezes and resort pools keep the coast viable, which is why Russian charter volume stays high year-round.
What to book, and how to add the Nile
Most Russian visitors come for the beach, but the excursions are what make the trip memorable. From Hurghada or Sharm you can add a day trip to the pyramids, a desert safari, or a diving package. The bigger upgrade is a few nights on the river: see our Nile cruise guide for how a Luxor–Aswan sailing works and when to book it. Remember you will need a full visa, not just the Sinai permit, to travel beyond the resort zone.
Money and health
The currency is the Egyptian pound, around 51.8 to the US dollar as of March 2026 (verify the live rate). Bring USD or EUR cash to exchange, as roubles are generally not accepted; note that Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard do not work abroad, so plan cash accordingly. No vaccines are required to enter, though the CDC suggests Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and typhoid for most travellers, and you should drink only bottled or filtered water.
Common questions
Are there direct flights from Russia to the Red Sea in 2026?
Yes. Direct service to Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh and Cairo is fully operational, with carriers including Aeroflot, Rossiya and Air Cairo, and daily charters running through the winter 2026 season. Because these routes have a sensitive suspension history, confirm current operators and any advisories before booking.
Do Russian citizens need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. Russian nationals are not visa-exempt. You can apply for the e-Visa online in advance (about USD 25 single entry) or get a Visa on Arrival. Cairo airport also began piloting a QR-code digital VOA on 1 August 2026 (USD 36 total), though Russian eligibility for the pilot is unconfirmed. Use the official portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg.
How much does an Egypt package from Russia cost?
As a guide, operators like Coral Travel have advertised 7-night all-inclusive Hurghada packages with direct Moscow flights from around EUR 777 for two, and Anex has listed Sharm/Hurghada tours from around USD 1,320 for two. Prices swing by season and board, so verify current rates with the operator.
When is the best time to visit Egypt's Red Sea?
October to April is ideal, with daytime temperatures around 22–28°C. For diving, November to April brings the clearest water (20–30 metres visibility). Summer is hot near 35°C but stays viable thanks to sea breezes and pools, which is why Russian charters run all year.
Can I visit Cairo or Luxor on the Sinai resort permit?
No. The free South Sinai entry permit (around 15 days) only covers the Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resort zones. To travel to Cairo, Luxor or a Nile cruise you need a full Egyptian visa, either the e-Visa or a standard Visa on Arrival.
Which tour operators run Egypt charters from Russia?
The main players include Coral Travel, Anex Tour, Pegas Touristik, Intourist, Biblio-Globus, TEZ Tour and Fun&Sun. They typically sell 7, 10 or 14-night all-inclusive Red Sea packages with the charter flight bundled in, departing Moscow and more than ten regional cities.
