Doha to Cairo is one of the easiest getaways in the Gulf: a direct hop of about three and a quarter hours, several times a day, landing you within reach of the pyramids by mid-morning. Qatari nationals cross visa-free, and when Qatar's summer turns fierce the Red Sea is an obvious release valve for a family beach week. This page lays out the flights, the entry rules for nationals and residents, and the trips worth booking.
Getting there: flights from Qatar
Qatar Airways and EgyptAir both fly direct Doha (DOH) to Cairo (CAI). Qatar Airways alone runs roughly 28 direct flights a week — effectively every day, often more than once — so the schedule bends to you rather than the other way round. Flight time is about 3h15m. Cheapest round-trip fares have been observed near USD 311 to 323 (roughly QAR 1,130 to 1,180), and Wego has cited fares from around QAR 862. Convert and verify at the time you book.
For the Red Sea, Doha to Hurghada (HRG) is served by EgyptAir, Qatar Airways and, via connection, Etihad — though some options are connecting rather than nonstop, so check direct availability by date. Fares have been observed from about USD 212 one-way. Sharm El Sheikh direct service is seasonal or charter-dependent, so many Sharm itineraries route through Cairo.
Visas: nationals versus residents
Entry rules split two ways, so confirm which applies to you before booking.
Qatari nationals enter Egypt visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 30 days. A visa is only needed if the stay runs longer than 30 days or is for work or study.
Expat residents of Qatar holding a valid Qatar residency permit qualify for a visa on arrival or e-visa, as long as the residency has at least six months left. The traditional single-entry tourist visa on arrival has been priced around USD 25 for a 30-day stay. Eligible travellers can also pre-approve through the official e-Visa portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg before departure.
The new digital visa on arrival
From 1 August 2026, Cairo International Airport launched a digital visa-on-arrival pilot across all arrival terminals, swapping paper stickers for a QR code. You can generate it before you fly, in the air, or on arrival — through the official portal at visaonarrival.gov.eg, a "Visa On Arrival" mobile app, or self-service kiosks in the arrival halls. Reported fees and validity still differ between sources (roughly USD 36, with QR validity quoted as either 48 hours or up to 7 days), so treat exact figures as unsettled during the pilot. Paper visas continue alongside the QR system for now, and the digital route is meant for tourism, not business.
What to book
Egypt specialists actively market Qatar-origin packages. Tripidays, for example, offers a private 5-day Cairo plus Hurghada tour — Giza pyramids paired with the Red Sea, including domestic flights and fees — alongside longer multi-city runs. The usual shape pairs Cairo sightseeing (pyramids, the Egyptian Museum) with a beach or diving leg in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. No native QAR price band is published; operators quote on request. As an indicative cross-market benchmark only, comparable Gulf packages have run from around USD 999 for an 8-day Hurghada holiday to about USD 1,220 for a 12-day multi-city trip. If you want to add a river leg, our Nile cruise guide covers the Luxor–Aswan stretch.
Best time to go
The peak family window is the summer school holidays, roughly June to August, when Qatar's heat drives a Red Sea escape. Hurghada in July and August runs about 34–37°C with near-zero rain, sea around 28°C, tempered by a sea breeze and low humidity. Eid Al-Adha, observed Thursday 28 May 2026 in Egypt, is a major short-break spike, with Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam the go-to beach picks. For Cairo and Nile sightseeing rather than beach, October to April is the cooler, more comfortable window.
Money and practical notes
The currency is the Egyptian Pound. Carry some clean USD or EUR cash for the cash-only visa kiosk and emergencies, and withdraw EGP from ATMs on arrival for better rates. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; Amex is patchy. Keep small notes for tipping (baksheesh), which is expected across most services, and let your bank know you are travelling to avoid card blocks.
Common questions
Do Qatari citizens need a visa for Egypt?
No. Qatari nationals enter Egypt visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 30 days. A visa is only required if you stay longer than 30 days or travel for work or study.
What about expats living in Qatar?
Foreign nationals with a valid Qatar residency permit (at least six months remaining) qualify for a visa on arrival or e-visa. The traditional single-entry tourist visa has been priced around USD 25 for 30 days. Verify the current fee at booking.
How long is the flight from Doha to Cairo?
About 3h15m direct. Qatar Airways and EgyptAir both fly it, with Qatar Airways running roughly 28 direct flights a week — effectively daily and often more than once a day.
Can I fly directly to the Red Sea from Qatar?
Doha to Hurghada is served by EgyptAir, Qatar Airways and (via connection) Etihad, with fares observed from about USD 212 one-way — but some options connect rather than fly nonstop. Sharm El Sheikh is usually seasonal or charter-based, so many Sharm trips route via Cairo. Verify direct availability by date.
What is the new digital visa on arrival at Cairo?
From 1 August 2026, Cairo airport began issuing QR-code visas via the official portal (visaonarrival.gov.eg), a mobile app, or airport kiosks, replacing paper stickers. Fees and validity still vary between sources (around USD 36) during the pilot, so verify before you fly. Paper visas remain available for now.
When is the best time to visit for a family beach trip?
The summer school holidays, June to August, are peak for Gulf families escaping the heat. Hurghada runs 34–37°C with warm 28°C water and low humidity. Eid Al-Adha (28 May 2026) is another big short-break window. For Cairo and Nile sightseeing, October to April is cooler.
