This is Egypt's great pilgrimage climb, made through the night to reach the summit of Mount Sinai for sunrise. You are collected from your Sharm El Sheikh hotel late in the evening and driven inland across the Sinai to the foot of the mountain, where a local Bedouin guide meets you around midnight. The ascent follows the longer camel path by the light of the moon and head-torches, a steady three-hour climb - camels are available for much of the route - finishing with the famous rock-cut Steps of Repentance to the summit. At the top, wrapped against the cold, you wait for first light: a slow, silent sunrise over a sea of jagged peaks, the moment that draws climbers of every faith to the place where tradition holds Moses received the Commandments. As the sun warms the rock you descend to St Catherine's Monastery at the mountain's base - one of the oldest working monasteries on earth, home to the Chapel of the Burning Bush and an extraordinary library of icons and manuscripts. After time to visit, you are driven back to Sharm, arriving mid-morning. A Bedouin guide, transfers and monastery entry are included. Warm layers, sturdy shoes and a torch are essential, as the summit is genuinely cold before dawn.
